About the Solid Waste Authority of Broward County

The Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Broward County is a group of leaders from Broward County and 28 cities.

They worked together to develop a long-term Master Plan for managing trash and recycling in Broward County. The cities will still be responsible for collection services. The plan is a playbook for what happens to trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk trash once it leaves the curb.

Today, about 39% of items in the trash could be recycled. The SWA wants to:

  • Reduce the amount of waste we create
  • Recycle as much as we can
  • Use smart, new ideas to help our environment

The Master Plan will improve how waste and recycling are managed in Broward County. Once the Master Plan is approved by the County and enough cities, the SWA will start putting it into action. One of the main goals is to increase the recycling rate from 39% to 75%, which is the State of Florida’s recycling goal.
