About the Solid Waste Authority of Broward County

The Solid Waste Authority (SWA) of Broward County is a group of leaders from Broward County and 28 cities. They are working together to create a long-term plan for managing trash and recycling. This plan is called the Master Plan.

Right now, each of the 28 cities has its own system for collecting and processing trash and recyclables from homes, businesses, and construction sites. Today, about 39% of items in the trash could be recycled. The SWA will use feedback from residents and businesses to improve recycling programs. They are creating a 40-year Solid Waste and Recycling Master Plan to help reduce waste and protect the environment.

The SWA wants to:

  • Reduce the waste we create.
  • Reuse items when possible.
  • Recycle as much as we can.
  • Use smart, new ideas to keep our environment clean.

About the Master Plan

The SWA is working on a plan that will improve how waste and recycling are managed in Broward County and the 28 cities.

Once the Master Plan is approved by the County and enough cities, the SWA will start putting it into action. One of the main goals is to increase the recycling rate from 39% to 75%, which is the State of Florida’s recycling goal.
