Broward SWA goals
1. Comprehensive Public Education: Conduct extensive public education campaigns to inform and engage residents on waste management practices and sustainability initiatives.
2. Encouragement of Recycling, Reduction, and Reuse: Actively promote practices that divert solid waste from landfills, with the aim of achieving zero waste.
3. Support for Regional Solutions: Collaborate with neighboring counties while prioritizing the needs and goals of Broward County and its municipal parties.
4. Research and Development: Engage in or support research and development efforts focused on innovative technologies and methods for waste disposal, reduction, recycling, and reuse, contributing to the creation of a sustainable and resilient waste management system.
In pursuit of these goals, the Authority will develop a coordinated, regional solid waste management and recycling master plan (“Master Plan”). The Master Plan will address expectations and incorporate strategies from each of the 28 member cities and the County to create an innovative, environmentally sustainable, and economically efficient regional solid waste management system that meets or exceeds the State of Florida’s 75 percent recycling goal.
While developing the Master Plan, the Authority will consider and evaluate all existing permitted facilities and properties within Broward County to optimize the waste management system and work towards the goal of zero waste. Additionally, while the Authority may offer collection and hauling services for solid waste and recyclable materials, the ultimate responsibility for providing such services remains with each local government in Broward County.
